medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Erik, this is most helpful: thank you. My problem is that the poet concerned
was a (probably) monoglot Welsh layman, writing in the second half of the
15th century, who was referring to a particular indulgence which he calls
`the Pardon of Cologne'. The oblique reference would thus seem to have
required no further explanation to his contemporaries. In an international
medieval context, does any one of the indulgences to which you refer fit the
bill?
Thanks again,
Paul

The indulgences in Cologne were published in the city in a printed booklet
with the title: "Beschryvanghe des aflayes und heyldoms dysser wyrdiger Stat
Colne." (Cologne 1492). The so-called "Kölner Heiltumsbüchlein".
It has a list of 69 days where special events in the churches of Cologne is
connected with indulgences. On January 1st could you as an example get an
indulgence in the Cathedral of 22 years and 6230 days, and in the church of
the Holy Spirit (Heiliggeist) would it be 120 years, 9 "Karenen" and 2180
days.
[I have no idea where this book can be consulted, but found the information
in Nicolaus Paulus: Geschichte des Ablasses im Mittelalter, III, 1923,
p.290]
But there must surely be a more recent account of the indulgences of the
greater German Pilgrim's places. (A matter for Tom Izbicki?)
Best
Erik
