medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (21. December) is the feast day of:
Honoratus of Toulouse (3rd cent.) Honoratus was from Navarra (Spain). He
succeeded Saturninus as bishop of Toulouse.
Themistocles and Dioscorus (d. 253) Themistocles was a shepherd of Myra
(Asia Minor). He was beheaded for refusing to tell the hiding place of
Dioscorus.
Anastasius II of Antioch (d. 609) Anastasius II succeeded Anastasius I as
patriarch of Antioch. He was murdered during a rebelliong of the Syrian
Jews against Emperor Phocas (who was persecuting them).
John Vincent (d. 1012) John was from Ravenna. He was a bishop somewhere
in the Ravenna area before he became a hermit on Monte Pirchiano.
Disciples gathered, and he eventually formed them into the monastery of St.
Michael of Chiusa.
Peter Canisius (d. 1597) Late for this list, but Advent has been pretty
effectively stripped of interesting saints by calendar reforms. Peter was
from Nijmegen (Netherlands). He became a Jesuit in 1543, and was the
leader of the Catholic Reformation in Germany. He preached, taught, wrote,
etc. throughout Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Bohemia, and Poland---by the
time he died, his short catechism had already been printed in 200 editions.
He has been called the second apostle of Germany. Peter was both
canonized and declared a doctor of the church in 1925.
