medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

I am wondering, in this regard, how one might properly characterize Butler's Lives of
the Saints, which I have always found quite useful. Although I cannot vouch for the
scholarly quality of the book, it at least bears a verisimilitude of reliance on primary
sources. Perhaps, however, Butler's religious position enters too strongly into his
interpretation of those sources?
