medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (30. December) is the feast day of:
Dionysius (d. c. 268) Dionysius was a Roman who became bishop of Rome
probably in 259. He succeeded in restoring the Roman Christian community
after Valerian's perseution.
Mansuetus, Severus, and companions (d. c. 483) This group of ten were all
martyred at Alexandria by Monophysites.
Irmina (d. 708) A 12th-century vita says that Irmina was a daughter of
King Dagobert II of Austrasia. She was betrothed in the usual way, but her
bridegroom died on their wedding day. I. then talked her dad into building
a nunnery for her, at Ohren near Trier. I. supported missionary monks of
all sorts and built Echternach for St. Willibrord in 698.
Egwin (d. 717) Egwin was an Anglo-Saxon noble who was perhaps a monk
before becoming bishop of Worcester in 692. He was driven away by a
hostile faction, but was reinstated after a trip to Rome to vindicate
himself. He probably founded Evesham Abbey.
Sebastian of Esztergom (blessed) (d. c. 1036) Sebastian was apparently a
Benedictine monk. He became archbishop of Esztergom and primate of Hungary
in 1002.
Margaret Colonna (blessed) (d. 1284) A daughter of the prince of
Palestrina, Margaret turned her family castle into a nunnery of Poor
Clares. She herself joined, and her brother (a cardinal) revised the
Franciscan rule for her use.
