medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I wish I DID know of a reference work that deals with cults of saints---I
second Meg's request for information. Of standard saint books, the Oxford
Dictionary of Saints definitely remains the most scholarly and detailed in
English, with occasional references to cult as well as biography. But,
while Farmer includes staggeringly obscure English saints, his coverage of
the rest of the world is definitely sporadic.
Brill has just contracted a multi-volume encyclopedia of pilgrimage in the
Middle Ages, which I trust will be a wonderful resource. . . in a few
years, when it comes out.
For Peter Claver, you might try the following:
Abston, Emanuel J. 1998. Catholicism and African Americans: A Study of
Claverism, 1909-1959. Tallahassee: Florida State University.
Farnum, Mabel. 1940. Street of the Half-moon, An Account of the Spanish
Noble, Pedro Claver. Milwaukee: The Bruce Publishing Company.
Lunn, Arnold. 1935. A Saint in the Slave Trade. New York: Sheed & Ward.
Tylenda, Joseph N. 1998. Jesuit Saints & Martyrs. 2d ed. Chicago: Loyola
Press.
Valtierra, Angel. 1960. Peter Claver, Saint of the Slaves. Translated by
Janet H. Perry and L.J. Woodward. Westminster, MD: Newman Press.
By the way, Zita's feast day is 27. April.

>Greetings all!
>I wonder if anyone can suggest scholarly studies about the CULTS OF St
>James the Greater, St. Zita of Lucca (about whom I know absolutely
>nothing, not even her feast day, but she apparently lived in the 13th
>century) and St. Peter Claver, who very much post-dates the timeframe of
>this list but perhaps someone has run across something on him.
>Also, what would list members (Phyllis?) suggest as an English language
>"first resource" for students or others investigating the development of
>the cult of a saint? I myself, after trying the Lexikon der Theologie und
>Kirche, would probably go to the Oxford Dictionary of Saints, but I'm
>wondering if there is something more recent and more oriented towards
>veneration rather than "biography".
>Thanks, and best wishes for the new year,
>Meg
