medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (22. December ) is the feast day of:
Chaeremon of Nilopolis and companions (d. c. 250) Chaeremon was the aged
bishop of Nilopolis. When the Decian persecution began, he and some
followers took to the hills and were never seen again. Odds are they were
either eaten by animals or enslaved by nomads.
Zeno of Nicomedia (d. 303) Zeno was a soldier based at Nicomedia. He made
the mistake of laughing while Emperor Diocletian was making a sacrifice to
Ceres---for which he first had his jaw broken and then was beheaded.
Flavian of Acquapendente (d. 362) Legend reports that Flavian was a
prefect of Rome, a good Christian who thus fell foul of Emperor Julian the
Apostate. F. was supposedly branded on the forehead as a slave and exiled
to Acquapendente, where he died.
Hunger (d. 866) Hunger (Unger) was made bishop of Utrecht in 856. He fled
to the monastery of Prum to escape Vikings and died there.
Amaswinthus (d. 982) Amaswinthus served successfully as abbot of the
monastery of Silva de Malaga in Andalusia for 42 years.
Marianus Scotus (blessed) (d. 1086) One of two Irish saints whose names
are latinized as "marianus," this Marianus became a monk in Ireland, but
in 1056 migrated to Cologne. He then became a recluse at Fulda and in 1069
ended up at Mainz. He wrote a very useful world chronicle.
Jutta of Disibodenberg (blessed) (d. 1136) The noble Jutta became a
recluse attached to the church of Disibodenberg on the Rhine. She educated
a number of girls, most notably Hildegard of Bingen, and with her disciples
in time formed a Benedictine convent.
Mary Mancini of Pisa (blessed) (d. 1431) Maria's mystica accomplishments,
evident from childhood, included the ability to see her personal guardian
angel. Loyal daughter of a Pisan noble family, she married at age twelve,
was widowed at age 16, married again, and was widowed at age 24. Then she
became a Dominican tertiary, ending up as prioress of a reformed tertiary
convent.
