<< What about Augustine, Gregory, Jerome and other
"ancients"? Were MSS of their letters ever ordered in any particular
way? Or is organization by theme or recipient confined to "moderns"? >>
The letters of Barsanuphius and John, two sixth-century Palestinian monks,
are groups in various ways in the MSS, but one way, followed in the recent
critical edition in Sources Chrétiennes, is for them to be arranged in the order
(i) solitaries, (ii) cenobites, (iii) bishops and lay people.
