medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Reading an essay in 'The Cambridge History of the Book in Britain' (full
reference below) I came across the statement:
"... the Cistercians did not approve of their monks either studying or
having access to legal materials."
Why? I'd have thought the originators of Big Business and modern management
methods wd have needed ready access to the law, or at least some familiarity
with it. Can anyone shed light?
