Title: Researcher/Project Manager
- Changing Workforce Programme's New Ways
of Working in Anaesthetics Pilot
FIXED TERM CONTRACT: 15 MONTHS FROM STARTING DATE
Base Royal Lancaster Infirmary - with some travel to
other sites within MBHT, and regional and national meetings (may involve
overnight stays)
Grade Admin and Clerical Grade 6

Responsible to: Directorate Manager- Critical Care
Accountable to: Head of Research and Development.
Role Summary: Developing and quality assuring a range of indicators
reflecting the effect of the new role on staff, patients, clinical outcomes
and activity. Using these to monitor and evaluate the project. To project
manage the implementation of the New ways of Working in Anaesthesia pilot.
Most challenging aspect of the job
Managing, and providing the academic underpinning for, a project which
challenges existing ways of working and the expectations of staff and
patients. This is a high-profile national pilot and the post holder must be
able to work independently and in consultation with key players within and
outside the Trust.
Key Result areas
Theoretical and evaluative
o Assume responsibility for the methodological development of
quality indicators for evaluating clinical anaesthetic care.
o Critical analysis of background published material and
relevance to practical development of project. Drafting and preparing
related articles for publication
o Collection of and ensuring the accuracy and quality of data
necessary to evaluate the effect of this new role.
Managerial
o Planning and monitoring of the project, providing regular
highlight reports plus milestone reports and exception reports to the local
management group.
o Operational and financial management of the project on a
day-to-day basis.
o Management of all aspects of the delivery of the required
objectives
Staffing
o Recruitment of overseas staff.
o Act as first point of contact for overseas practitioners
during their induction and orientation.
o Provide support and practical assistance throughout the
overseas practitioners' stay.
o Build on existing systems to ensure junior anaesthetic staff
compliance with the European Working Time Directive.
Communication and liaison
o Co-ordination of meetings of the local management group for
the project.
* Act as first point of contact for Changing Workforce Project
* Ensure appropriate communication within the Trust and with
other sites participating in Themes 1 to 4 of the project
* Ensure successes of pilot role widely communicated
nationally
* To represent the Trust at national meetings associated with
the Project
* Liaise with clinical staff and professional bodies to comply
with arrangements for governance which are transparent and measurable.
* Ensure that pilot develops in line with other modernisation
projects - specifically, the modernisation of theatre services and
pre-operative visiting
Specific outcomes
o Regular reports on the progress of the project as specified
o Monitoring of critical incident rates
o Junior doctor compliance with European Working Time
Directives
o Attendance at Directorate and Theatre Management Group
meetings
o Pilot completed within budget
o Presentations and publications as required
