medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (4. November) is the feast day of:
Vitalis and Agricola (d. c. 304) Less famous than Gervasius and Protasius,
Vitalis and Agricola were also saints "discovered" by Ambrose of
Milan---who dug up some bones and encouraged the invention of a legend to
account for them. The legend tells that Vitalis was a slave, martyred with
such courage that his master Agricola accepted death too. Their cult was
confined to local calendars in 1969.
John Zedazneli (6th cent.) John led a group of Syrian monks who
evangelized Georgia and introduced monasticism there.
Joannicius the Great (d. 846) The Bithynian Joannicius was a member of the
Byzantine imperial guard during the iconoclast period. He saw the light,
though, and became a hermit who defended icons and was known for his powers
of prophecy and miracle-working.
Gregory of Burtscheid (d. 1002) Gregory was abbot of an eastern-rite
monastery at Cerchiara in Calabria. After fleeing from Muslim raids, he
met Emperor Otto III in Rome, and went back to Germany with him. Otto
founded the eastern-rite monastery of Burtscheid (near Aachen) for Gregory,
which was a center of Byzantine influence in the Ottonian empire.
Emeric of Hungary (d. 1031) Emeric was the son and heir of Stephen of
Hungary. He was shaping up to be a model ruler, but died before his father
in a hunting accident. He was canonized together with his dad in 1083.
Frances d'Amboise (blessed) (d. 1485) Frances was a Breton noblewoman.
She married the duke of Brittany, eventually reforming him with her prayers
and pious example. She introduced the Carmelite nuns to Brittany and
became a nun herself when widowed in 1460.
