medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (13. November) is the feast day of:
Arcadius, Probus, and companions (d. 437) This was a group of Spaniards,
taken to Africa by the Vandal (Arian) king Genseric. They were the first
to be martyred in the Vandal persecution.
Brice (Britius) (d. 444) Brice was a disciple of Martin of Tours, and
succeed Martin as bishop in 397. He proved to be a bad bishop, with a
reputation for ambition and licentiousness, and finally he was expelled.
B. then went to Rome, where he repented, after which Tours let him come
back again, and he was an enormous success.
Devinicus (6th cent.) Devinicus was from Aberdeen (Scotland), associated
with the missionary work of St. Machar and other disciples of Colum Cille.
He evangelized Caithness.
Caillin (7th cent.) Caillin was an Irish bishop, connected in legend to
Aidan of Fearns. Caillin's most notable feat was turning a group of
sceptical druids into a stone circle.
Nicholas I the Great (d. 867) Nicholas, a native of Rome, was elected pope
in 858. He proved to be a very forceful and independent pontiff, working
to expand the Latin church to Scandinavia and Bulgaria besides trying to
end the schism with the eastern church led bay Patriarch Photius of
Constantinople.
Abbo of Fleury (d. 1004) Abbo was a child oblate at Fleury. He became a
famous scholar, even spending two years at Ramsey Abbey in England teaching
monks there. He became abbot of Fleury in 988, and was called in several
times to reform other monasteries. The last one, La Reole in Gascony,
resented A's ministrations so much that they rioted and killed him, winning
him veneration as a martyr of reform.
Homobonus (d. 1197) Homobonus was a merchant in Cremona. He was famous
for his honesty, model family life, and charity. To top it all off, he
died during mass. He was canonized within two years of his death.
