medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (9. November) is the feast day of:
Theodore (4th cent.) According to Legend, Theodore was a recruit in the
Roman army who set fire to the temple of Cybele at Euchaita (Pontus).
Fittingly, he was then burned alive. He seems to be the same person as the
Theodore commemorated on 7. February (although that one's a general). In
the eastern church, Theodore is one of the three great soldier saints
(along with George and Demetrius); in the west he got demoted to local
calendar status in 1969.
Benignus of Armagh (d. c. 466?) Legend tells that Benignus (Benen) was
Patrick of Ireland's favorite disciple. He is credited with evangelizing
Clare and Kerry before becoming archbishop of Armagh. Legend also connects
B. with Glastonbury, which may suggest how reliable the whole tradition is.
Pabo Post-Prydain (d. c. 510) Pabo, called the "bulward of Pictland" was a
nobleman of what is now the Scottish Borders. He was a soldier who ended
up as a refugee, going to Wales where he founded the church at Llanbabo
(Anglesey).
Eustolia & Sosipatra (d. 610 and 625) E and S appear to have been
daughters of the eastern emperor Maurice. The founded a convent at
Constantinople and entered it together.
Simeon Metaphrastes (10th cent.) Simeon suffered an odd fate: he is the
most famous Byzantine hagiographer, creator of a great collection of lives
of saints (the Menologion) that has circulated in the East ever since his
lifetime. But nothing at all is known about Simeon's own life.
Helen of Hungary (Ilona) (blessed) (d. c. 1270) Helen's cult has never
been officially approved, but she is venerated in Hungary and by the
Dominicans. She was a Dominican nun at Veszprem, where she served as
novice mistress training, among others, St. Margaret of Hungary. She is
said to have had the stigmata.
