medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (2. November) is the feast day of:
Justus of Trieste (d. 303) Justus was arrested in Diocletian's persecution
and martyred by being drowned in the sea.
Victorinus of Pettau (d. c. 304) Victorinus was bishop of Pettau (now Ptuj
in Slovenia). He is the earliest known western biblical exegete (his
commentary on Revelation is still extant). V. was martyred in Diocletian's
reign.
Carterius and companions (d. c. 315) This was a group of ten soldiers,
burned at the stake at Sebaste (Armenia) in the reign of Licinius.
Eustochium of Tarsus (d. 362) Eustochium was a woman of Tarsus. In the
reign of Julian she refused to sacrifice to Aphrodite, and was tortured to
death. I feel that there has to be more to this story. Julian didn't pass
laws making refusal to sacrifice a capital offense again, did he?
Marcian of Cyrrhus (d. 387) Marcian was an imperial courtier, but gave up
his military career to become a hermit in the Syrian desert.
Tigridia (d. c. 925) Tigridia was an Old Castilian. Her noble father
founded the Benedictine convent of Ona near Burgos for her.
