medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Perhaps a sidenote on this: circa Henry VIII the royal initials
(H for Henry K, for Katherine of Aragon) were used in costuming
and decor for events--tournaments, pageants, banquets, parades,
etc. And personal or equine costumes in tournaments often
featured chivalric sentiments relating to the theme of the
decor.
But the inscriptions along the lower edge of the garment(s) in

which are contemporaneous but a couple countries away, are
really quite different. They look more routinely pious than
momentarily celebratory.
But: different place, different time.
