medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Someone recently asked about saints with connections to the Jews, amongst whom,
I have just learned, ranked St Arethas, a 6th-century saint from southern Arabia who
was martryred by a Jewish convert. His cult dwindled in Arabia from the 7th
century, but he was fairly prominent in the Byzantine east, none the less. A very full
bibilography can be found in the splendid new book by Christopher Walter, The
Warrior Saints in Byzantine Art and Tradition (Ashgate, 2003), pp. 195-99.
Cheers,
Jim Bugslag
