medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
A friend (Spaniard) wrote the following in response to my forwarding the
initual query to him:
I think the two words in the ms are two family names, the first one
being an ancient transcription of "Villalba" or "Villalva," when
orthographical hesitation between u/v-b was still common, i.e. before
1700 around. I wonder if there is also some initial + period preceding
such two names, for as you know Spaniards bear both the fatherīs name
and the motherīs. As for "Royo" (meaning "red" in some northern
dialects), the name is more common in the upper half of Spain.
Therefore, the ms might proceed from some religious place in the
Castiles, Navarre or Aragon.
He's quite interested in seeing the images as I think many on the list are.
Best,
MG
