Robert
when I lived in Kent -many moons ago - people used to shove books through the
library letter box, and they used to pile up on the mat against the door on
display for everyone to see. However, the library was very laid back about it
and I never heard of any problems (Faversham library).
In academic libraries drop boxes work well but they tend to have large purpose
built affairs which are emptied very regularly, as volume of returns at end of
term, for example, is phenonmenal. More damage is likely if books drop great
heights and get entangled - with a decent box I don't see it should be a
problem if emptied regularly - unless you have a vandalism problem of course?
