medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Of course, I didn't mean David Rollins, I meant David Rollason. Sorry.

Egbert's advisor, or thane, was significantly named Thor, I believe, and
Aethelbert and Aethelred were surreptitiously buried under the throne,
also significant. I believe, though, that it was the aunt, Domne Eafe,
who received the blood price of the Minster in Thanet. There is a nice
story about that wherein it is said that Egbert promised Eafe as much
land for her abbey as her pet hind could go around in a day. Her hind
went round the whole isle of Thanet. The minster became a safe haven
for the women of the Kentish royal line. At least that is my
recollection - I'm sure others on the list are more knowledgeable in
this area. Anyway, as I recall, Eafe's children were all sainted, but
the most famous was St. Mildreth. I think it's David Rollins who wrote
a book on St. Mildreth with all the interesting stories of the murder of
the two princes and the donation of Thanet.

Today (17. October) is the feast day of:
Solina (d. c. 290) Legend tells that Solina was a young woman
(beautiful,
no doubt) from a non-Christian family in Gascony. A marriage was
arranged
for her, and she fled to Chartres to avoid it, only to be captured and
beheaded there.
Mamelta (d. c. 344) According to tradition, Mamelta was a Zoroastrian
priestess at Bethfarme (Persia) (does anyone know if Zoroastrianism
*does*
have priestesses?). She converted to Christianity and was baptized, but
was then recognized as a Christian because she was wearing a white
baptismal gown. A mob stoned her, then threw her in a lake to drown.
Regulus (Rule) of St. Andrew's (4th cent.?) A ninth-century legend
tells
that Rule was a Greek abbot who came to Scotland, carrying relics of St.
Andrew with him, and then established a church at what is now St.
Andrew's
in Fife. Spoilsport realists suggest it was much more likely he was a
later Irish missionary.
Aethelbert & Aethelred (d. 670) These brothers have a claim to
reflected
holiness: they were great-grandsons of Aethelbert of Kent and brothers
of
St. Ermenburga. But their murder was political; they had a claim to the
throne of Kent, so King Egbert's chief advisor murdered them. In
expiation, Egbert founded Minster Abbey fo their sister.
Justus of Susa (10th cent.?) Justus' relics were found in Susa
(Piedmont,
Italy) in 1087, and a monastery was built around his shrine. A legend
says
that J. was a monk, killed by robbers nearby. His cult was confirmed in
1903.
Rudolf of Gubbio (d. c. 1066) Rudolf became a monk at Fonte Avellana
under
Peter Damian, and then bishop of Gubbio in 1061. Before dying at a
young
age, he won a wide reputation for his generosity of spirit.
