medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (6. October) is the feast day of:
Faith (Foi) of Conques (3rd cent.) Faith was a native of Agen in Gaul, and
while still a girl was martyred there in the rein of Maximian. Her shrine
at Conques became an important pilgimage center.
Aurea of Boves (8th cent.) Aurea was a native of Amiens. While still a
girl, she became a hermit at Boves, eventually attracting so many followers
that she formed a large community there.
Pardulf (d. 738) Pardulf, blind from youth, was from the area of Limoges.
He became a hermit, then a monk and abbot at Gueret. At the time of the
great Moorish raid of 732, Pardulf remained alone in his
monastery---according to legend saving it with his prayers.
Nicetas the Patrician (d. c. 838) Nicetas became a monk at Constantinople.
He was active in opposing the revived imperial policy of iconoclasm and
was sent into exile, where he died.
Adalbero of Wurzburg (d. 1090) Adalbero became bishop of Wurzburg in 1045.
He supported Gregory VII in the Investiture Contest, for which he was
exiled to a monastery by Emperor Henry IV.
Bruno of Chartreuse (d. 1101) Bruno was a native of Cologne. He studied
at Rheims and Paris, and rose rapidly to important church office in Cologne
and Rheims. But he gave up his positions and became a hermit, in time
withdrawing to La Grande Chartreuse in the Alps with six companions. This
was the beginning of the Carthusian order of "cenobitic hermits." After
six years, Bruno was forced to leave his community; he was called by his
disciple Urban II to serve as a papal advisor; but he founded another
monastery in Calabria, where he retired.
