EXECUTIVE BRIEFING
Equal Access for Disabled People: the role of library and information providers
6 November 2003, at CILIP, London
This executive briefing is aimed at all Policy and Decision makers to get you up to speed on your statutory duties and obligations. The day will give you the opportunity to find out about innovative ways to provide equal access and learn from best practice.
Since 1995 all public sector organisations have had to comply with the DDA .On 1st September 2002 the DDA (as amended by Special Educational Needs & Disability Act 2001) began to cover education. For post-16 Education, the act is as comprehensive for service providers covered by DDA part III including making adjustments to policies, auxiliary aids & services (Sept 2003) and physical access (from Sept 2005). For schools it is a 'jigsaw' of provision, which creates problems even though there is the SEN framework & the Learning & Skills Act 2000. From 28 March 2003 DRC established a formal investigation into website accessibility for disabled people. From October 2004 the rights that already exist for people with disabilities will be extended and service providers will have to address physical features, which make it unreasonably difficult for disabled people to use their services. But it is not just about addressing physical features. There are many other areas to be addressed.
All this legislation & these different initiatives put pressure on Library & Information Services across all sectors to ensure services are accessible to all.
