medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (18. September) is the feast day of:
Ferreolus of Vienne (d. c. 304) Ferreolus was a Roman army officer,
according to legend Julian of Brioude's commanding officer. During a
persecution (probably Diocletian's) he was imprisoned in a latrine pit at
Vienne, but escaped through the sewer (!) He was recaptured and beheaded.
Methodius of Olympus (d. 311) Methodius was bishop of Olympus (in Lycia,
Asia Minor). He was an important philosopher-theologian: his *Banquet of
the Ten Virgins* is a Christian take-off of Plato's Symposium, and he wrote
a treatise on the resurrection against Origen's teaching on the subject.
He is supposed to have been martyred at Chalcis.
Eumenes (7th cent.) Eumenes was bisho of Gortyn (Crete). He opposed the
imperially-sponsored doctrine of monothelitism (that Jesus has only one
will), for which he was exiled to the Egyptian Thebaid. E. died there, but
his relics were returned to his diocese, where so many miracles were
associated with them that E. got the nickname "wonderworker."
Richardis (d. c. 895) A daughter of the comital family of Alsace,
Richardis was married to Emperor Charles the Fat in 862. Nineteen years
later she was accused of adultery with the chancellor, was cleared of the
charge, but retired to the convent of Andlau near Strassburg (which she had
founded).
Simon of Crespy (d. c. 1080) Simon was count of Crespy in Valois, brought
up at William the Conqueror's court. He was converted to a religious life
by the sight of his own father's decomposing body (I'm not sure I want to
know the details of this one), and set of on a pilgrimage to Rome. But he
stopped at the monastery of St. Claude in the Jura, where he became a monk.
Gregory VII summoned him to Rome in 1080 to enter papal service, but he
died at Rome.
