medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (23. September) is the feast day of:
Linus (d. c. 79) According to Irenaeus, Linus succeeded St. Peter as
bishop of Rome in 67. He was credited with martyrdom, although there is no
historic evidence of this. His cult was suppressed in 1969 (although his
name still appears in the Roman canon of the mass).
Thecla "the Apostolic" (1st cent.) The Acts of Paul and Thecla (which my
Benedictine saints' dictionary describes as a "work of pious fiction") tell
that Thecla was a young woman who heard Paul preach at Iconium. She
converted, and started following Paul around, dressed as a boy. She
suffered torture and finally died as a hermit. Her cult was suppressed (on
grounds of dubious historicity) in 1969.
Adamnan of Iona (d. 704) Adamnan was a native of Co. Donegal, Ireland. He
became abbot of Iona in 679. He is credited with producing a law code,
besides supporting Roman observance of Easter (although Iona kept the Irish
practice) and writing an important vita of St. Columcille.
Andrew, John, Peter, & Antony (d. 900) The Muslim Aghlabids (from Tunisia)
conquered the city of Syracuse. They deported these four men (for reasons
I can't discover) from the city, then tortured and executed them.
Guy of Durnes (blessed) (d. c. 1157) Guy was a monk of Clairvaux, and a
special favorite of St. Bernard. He was sent to found the monastery of
Cherlieu. He also revised Cistercian chant at Bernard's request; his
revision was approved at the general cahpter of 1150.
Christopher of Tlaxcala (blessed) (d. 1527) Christopher was a native of
Tlaxcala (now in Mexico), converted by Franciscans. His father objected,
and on a family feast day was egged on by one of his wives to beat Chris
and then throw him on a bonfire.
Anthony and John of Tlaxcala (blessed) (d. 1529) Anthony and John were two
native Tlaxcalans (from Mexico) who were converted and sent to evangelize
Oaxaca along with a Dominican tertiary. They ran across that frequent if
inexplicable dislike that people have to having their cult statues
destroyed. Anthony went into a temple at Cuauhtinchan to destroy the holy
images, while John waited outside---where the local populace beat him to
death. When Anthony came out, they did the same to him.
