The National Audit Office is undertaking a 'value for money' review of the
British Library's effectiveness in providing services to its 'remote'
users. The National Audit Office carries out 60 such reviews of public
sector organisations every year - six within the sector covered by the
British Library's sponsor Department, the Department for Culture, Media and
Sport. These reviews assess how well public money is being used in order to
make improvements in public services.
The NAO's British Library study will look specifically at three areas of
the BL's service provision to its 'remote' users:
* whether the Library's website is effective in facilitating remote use;
* whether the Library has an effective programme for converting material
into digital form;
* whether the document supply service is meeting the needs of users
effectively.
The NAO is carrying out fieldwork and research with the aim of producing a
final report in early 2004. The NAO team is keen to hear from individuals
and representatives of organisations who may or may not be regular users of
the Library's services. Comments on the issues described above should be
submitted, preferably by email to [log in to unmask] Alternatively,
comments sent by post should be addressed to 'British Library study
comments', Room C522A, National Audit Office, 157-197 Buckingham Palace
Road, London SW1W 9SP. All comments should reach the NAO by 30th September
2003.
