medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (27. September) is the feast day of:
Euprepius of Verona (3rd cent.?) Euprepius is honored as first bishop of
Verona; medieval wishful thinkers said he had been appointed by St. Peter.
Gaius of Milan (1st cent.?) According to legend, Gaius was the second
bishop of Milan, succeeding Barnabus. It should be noted that there is no
evidence of a diocese centered on Milan before 200 and G's existence is
doubtful, even if St. Charles Borromeo *did* enshrine Gaius' relics.
Sigebert of East Anglia (d. c. 635) Sigebert was the first Christian king
of East Anglia, baptized while living in exile in France. After actively
working to christianize his land, he retired to become a monk---but was
forced to come out to lead the army against the invading Penda of Mercia.
Armed with a staff (he refused to bear weapons), Sigebert did as he was
asked; it's disappointing to discover that, rather than enjoying a
miraculous victory, S. was killed and his army was routed. He is regarded
as a martyr.
Adolf and John (d. c. 850) Adolf and John were brothers from Seville, sons
of a Christian mother and a Muslim father. They were martyred at Cordoba
because of their preference for their mother's religion.
Bonfilius of Foligno (d. 1125) Bonfilius was from near Ancona (Italy) He
became a monk at Storace, where he became abbot. From 1078 on he was
bishop of Foligno, but abdicated in 1096 after he had made a pilgrimage to
the Holy Land.
Eleazar de Sabran (d. 1323) Eleazar was a Provencal noble, married to the
Blessed Delphine. He held territory in the kingdom of Naples, where he
became tutor to a prince and then as regent. He was noted for honesty and
for his penitential and prayerful life. E. was canonized in 1369.
