medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (10. August) is the feast day of:
Lawrence of Rome (d. 258) Probably the most famous
martyr of the patristic
era; Ambrose, Leo the Great, Augustine, and
Prudentius all wrote about him.
Lawrence's acta, written at least a century after
his death, tell that L.
was a deacon under Sixtus II, martyred three days
after Sixtus was-he had
been given a reprieve to turn over the wealth of the
church to the
authorities, and so annoyed them when he brought
together an assembly of
poor people, saying "these are the wealth of the
church," that he was then
slowly roasted on a gridiron.
Martyrs of Rome (d. 274) 165 Romans martyred in the
reign of Aurelian are
commemorated today.
Asteria (d. c. 307) A lot of female early saints
seem to have been
martyred because they were caught burying martyrs.
According to her acta,
Asteria was one of their number; she helped bury St.
Alexander in Bergamo,
Italy, was caught, and martyred.
Blane (Blain) (6th cent.) Blane was a disciple of
the Irish saints Comgall
and Canice. B. became a bishop in Scotland and also
founded the monastery
of Dunblane, where he was buried.
Gerontius (6th cent.) Not one but two Celtic
rulers. One is supposed to
have been a king of Devon who died in battle against
the Saxons; he and his
wife Enid appear in many legends. The other was a
king of Cornwall.
Thiento and companions (d. 955) Thiento was abbot
of Wessobrunn (Bavaria).
He and six of his monks were killed in a Magyar
raid.
