medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (4. August) is the feast day of:
Aristarchus of Thessalonika (1st cent.)
Aristarchus' was Paul's traveling
companion for a time. Legend reports that he was
first bishop of
Thessalonika, and that he was martyred along with
Paul at Rome.
Ia and Companions (d. 360) Ia was a Greek slave of
uncertain gender (the
name means "Violet"). Ia was martyred in Persia
along with many other
Christians (according to legend 9,000 of them) in
Shapur II's persecution.
Lua (Molua) (d. c. 609) Probably a native of
Limerick, Lua was a disciple
of St. Comgall and went on to found many monasteries
(legend says 120 of
them), of which the most important is Killaloe in
Co. Clare. He was one of
those extremely austere early Irish abbots; like
others of his ilk, though,
he was supernaturally close to animals.
Raynerius of Split (d. 1180) Raynerius was a monk
of Fonte Avellana. He
became bishop of Cagli (Italy) in 1156 and
archbishop of Split (Croatia) in
1175. His zeal to restore property that had been
alienated from his
diocese led to his murder.
