Glossary of Terms Used in Heraldry (1894): "A star within a
crescent appears as the badge of RICHARD I., JOHN, and HENRY
III., and was possibly intended to signify the ascendancy of
Christianity over Mahomedanism, and so emblematic of the
Crusades."
