medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (8. August) is the feast day of:
Hormisdas the Persian (d. 420) Hormisdas was a
young Persian noble. He
refused to foreswear his Christian beliefs, so King
Bahram degraded him to
the rank of army camel-driver. It's not clear if he
was executed or exiled
after that.
Severus of Vienne (d. c. 445) Severus was a
missionary priest, working
from Vienne (Gaul). He was originally from the
east-legend says from
India, but historians think Yemen more likely.
Altmann (d. 1091) The Westphalian Altmann became a
canon at Paderborn,
imperial chaplain, and then bishop of Passau. He
supported Gregory VII in
the Investiture Contest (or he wouldn't be on this
list), and was exiled by
the annoyed Henry IV. Altmann was an important
early supporter of the
canon regular movement, founding several houses of
Augustinian canons.
Dominic de Guzman (d. 1221) The founder of the
Order of Preachers, Dominic
was a canon regular at Osma, whose travel through
southern France in 1202
convinced him of the need of educated
preachers-willing to live in poverty,
the better to reach common people. The Dominican
Order actually got its
start when D. and Bishop Diego founded a convent for
women converts from
Catharism. The preaching order won papal approval
in 1216. Dominic spent
the rest of his life preaching, organizing the
order, and winning recruits
especially at the universities. He was canonized in
1234.
Augustine Kazotic (blessed) (d. 1323) Augustine was
born near Split
(Dalmatia). He became a Dominican and after years
of preaching in Croatia
and Hungary became bishop of Zagreb (later
transferred to Lucera, Italy.
He was noted in a not particularly nice age for his
gifts of gentleness and
healing.
Fourteen Holy Helpers. A popular late medieval
devotion to saints regarded
as most helpful in time of need. They were: Giles,
Acacius, Barbara,
Blaise, Catherine of Alexandria, Christopher, Cyriac
of Rome, Dionysius of
Paris, Erasmus, Eustace, George, Margaret,
Pantaleon, and Vitus. The
collective cult was suppressed in 1969.
