Masters Programme in Evidence Based Health Care
Postgraduate Certificate
Starting 15 September 2003
The Certificate is intended for health professionals who wish to obtain the
skills that are needed to access existing evidence, disseminate evidence,
and use evidence to promote informed decision making.
The Programme seeks to accommodate the busy and demanding work schedules of
health care professionals and, therefore, is provided on a part-time
basis.
We are also now offering 6 newly accredited short courses, each carrying
CATS points from Oxford University
Ethics in Health Care Course
25, 30 September, 2, 9, 14 October 2003
This 5-day course aims to give people practical skills for considering
ethical issues in the context of health care decision making. Course
participants will increase their ability to analyse and assess arguments,
apply ethical concepts to moral dilemmas, and articulate their own values
and feelings.
Randomised Controlled Trials
26 September, 1, 7, 13, 17 October 2003
This 5-day course follows a problem based learning approach and aims to
help students with the practicalities of conducting randomised trials. This
includes the processes for resourcing the trial, recruiting and randomising
participants, maintaining the trial's momentum, and analysing and reporting
findings. It should be of relevance to anyone who might be involved in the
future planning, commissioning, or interpretation of randomised trials.
Health Status Measurement
29 September, 3, 6, 10, 16 October 2003
This 5-day course aims to develop informed users of a range of different
types of health status measures including health-related quality of life.
It covers conceptual ideas, properties of measurement, cross-cultural
issues and economic aspects.
Qualitative Research Methods
30 September, 1, 7, 8, 13 October 2003
Qualitative research methods are becoming increasingly important in health
care. This 5 day course explores the use of qualitative methods to enhance
RCTs and explain epidemiological data. It also prepares students to design
and conduct a qualitative research project using methodological approaches
ranging from phenomenology, and grounded theory to service evaluation and
action research.
Systematic Reviews
9, 11, 13, 16, 18 February 2004
This 5 day course takes participants through the process of doing a
systematic review and focuses on the practicalities rather than the theory.
It considers the practical aspects of, for example, question formulation,
study identification, appraisal of quality, data extraction and collection,
statistical synthesis and reporting. By the end of the course, the
participants should be able to undertake, with increased confidence and
ability, their own systematic review; be better able to interpret the
results of systematic reviews done by others and to have answers to any
questions they might have about systematic reviews.
Managing Change in Health Care
12-16 Jan & 19-23 April 2004
This 10 day course uses a combination of action learning and work based
learning to teach principles of change management to health professionals.
Four key steps to change management are used to resolve work based health
care issues and contribute to clinical effectiveness programmes: Conducting
organisational analysis, Working with multidisciplinary teams to identify
appropriate strategies for change in your workplace, Implementing plans for
health care improvement Developing feasible methods for monitoring change
and overall evaluation of the process. The course provides:
1. Flexible learning for professionals with limited time
2. Ongoing tutor support for a work based project
3. Transferable skills and materials applicable to varied change management
projects
