Dear Stephen,
May I ask in what church you are a musician? I teach at the College of
Charleston (though I am not there at present) and would be delighted to meet
anyone who is competent in latin hymns (the more so as your information could be
rather good counter evidence to an article I have just written but which, luckily,
it is too late to change!

Having read some of the other responses, I'm not sure how much help this
is. As a church musician, I've had occasion to investigate hymn texts
etc. The popular Hymn "Salve festa dies" has many versions from all over
western Europe. One text celebrating the Feast of the Assumption of the
B.V.M. has references to the goddess Diana. When you think about it, the
metaphor is there, although I would not dare to use an English translation
of that text in church today! My point is that contemporary beliefs and
or explanations quite often appear in hymnody. You might check the source
I've used before, "Analecta Hymnica". Its 55+ volumes contain all sorts
of things. BTW if anyone knows a website that has that work up on it, I'd
love to know about it. Thanks, and I hope this helps a little.
