medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (16. July) is the feast day of:
Faustus (d. c. 250) A saint of unknown location, Faustus was a Greek,
crucified and used for archery practice. They must have been awfully bad
shots, though, because according to legend F. took five days to die.
Eustathius of Antioch (d. c. 335) Eustathius was a native of Pamphylia
(Asia Minor). He became bishop of Beroea (Syria) in 270 and patriarch of
Antioch in 323. E. was an active opponent of the Arians, and in 331 an
Arian synod held at Antioch deposed and exiled him, starting a long-lasting
schism at Antioch. E. died in exile in Thrace.
Helier (d. c. 558) Helier was from Tongres. He became a hermit on the
island of Jersey. He tried to pull off a feat achieved by several other
hermits: to convert robbers. In his case, though, it backfired and Helier
was murdered.
Fulrad (d. 784) Fulrad was a rich Alsatian noble. He became a monk at
St-Denis, rising to the abbacy in 750. He was a leading courtier at
Charlemagne's court, serving as "grand almoner."
Sisenand (d. 851) One of the martyrs of Cordoba. Sisenand was perhaps
from Badajoz, and was a deacon at Cordoba. He was beheaded in the reign of
Abd ar-Rahman II.
