medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
In pursuit of a side-thread about lighthouses on the MedGen list, I came
across the following:
"One of the earliest benefactors [to establish a shore-mark] was St Dublan,
who left Wales for Ireland in the fifth century and built his rectory where
Churchtown-over-Hook now stands. Having seen for himself the perils of the
coast and the dangerous currents, he established a beacon consisting of an
iron basket of coal or wood replenished from a ladder and kept ablaze all
night. This was Ireland's first lighthouse, known as Hook Point."
Source: SUTTON-JONES, Kenneth. Pharos: the lighthouse yesterday today and
tomorrow. M. Russell, 1985. p10.
Does anyone (Phyllis?) know anything about St Dublan or his background? The
source is not a scholarly one and offers no references whatsoever, so I'd be
grateful for any crumbs of comment.
