medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (31. July) is the feast day of:
Calimerius (d. c. 190) Calimerius was a Greek, educated at Rome. He
became bishop of Mlan and evangelized the Po valley. He was finally
martyred by being dropped down a well (which has always seemed like an
awful thing to do to a well to me).
Fabius of Caesarea (d. 300) Fabius was a soldier, beheaded at Caesarea in
Mauretania after he refusedto carry a standard that had non-Christian
symbols on it.
Germanus of Auxerre (d. 448) Germanus was a nobleman, a native of Auxerre.
He studied law at Rome and then became governor of his native province.
He "got religion" in 418 and became bishop of his hometown. He is best
known for his two visits to Britain to fight Pelagians (and also Saxons;
Bede tells of the "Alleluia victory" under G's leadership).
Syrian Monks (d. 517) A group of 350 Syrian monks were massacred by
monophysites for defending the ruling of the council of Chalcedon on the
nature of Christ.
Helen of Skovde (d. c. 1160) This Swedish noblewoman gave her fortune to
the poor and the Church when she was widowed. Her family (apparently not
entirely converted and involved in an anti-Christian reaction) had her
waylaid and murdered while on her way to church.
Giovanni Colombini (d. 1367) Giovanni was a Sienese magistrate, ambitious,
bad-tempered, and greedy---until he read about St. Mary of Egypt and
converted. In time he formed a society of laypeople dedicated to penance
and charity, called the Jesuati.
Ignatius of Loyola (d. 1556) A very good transitional saint for the end of
the Middle Ages. Ignatius was a soldier, seriously wounded and converted
during his convalescence. He wrote the Spiritual Exercises and in 1534 he
and his first followers took vows to start the Society of Jesus (Jesuits).
