There is still time to nominate someone!
The Godfrey Award is presented every two years to a librarian, archivist or
curator who, in the opinion of the judges has furthered the use,
appreciation and understanding of maps in an exceptional way.
The award is made by Alan Godfrey Maps in association with the British
Cartographic Society and consists of a cheque for £350 together with a
specially commissioned carving by the sculptor Ralph Williams. The carving
is different on each occasion but is normally of a migrating bird,
signifying the great travellers. The award is presented at the Annual
Symposium of the British Cartographic Society.
The previous winners of the award have been:
Martin Hayes, Local Studies Librarian, West Sussex Libraries.
Ralph Hyde, Keeper of Maps & Prints, Guildhall Library, London.
David Mander, Archivist, Hackney Archives Department.
Margaret Wilkes, Map Superintendent, National Library of Scotland.
Colin Edwards, Archivist, Cornwall County Record Office.
Nominations are invited for the award to be presented in September 2003.
The award is open to any librarian, archivist or curator in Britain or
Ireland, and nominations should be sent to: Julie Snook, Awards Officer,
British Cartographic Society, 16 Emmett Rd, Rownhams, Southampton, S016 8JB
Nominations should state a proposer and seconder and should include a
summary of the nominee's achievements, especially over the last two years,
with (for instance) information about any special exhibitions, catalogues,
presentations etc which the judges may wish to consider. Nominations are
welcomed from all fields, including public map libraries and record
offices, academic or commercial libraries, and museums. The proposer and
seconder do not need to be from the map world and may, for instance,
include readers or researchers who feel a librarian has given especially
good service. The closing date for entries is 15th July 2003.
