medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
If I recall correctly, the S. Roque venerated at Rocamador owes his existence to such a "back-formation"

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Recent mention of Candida of Whitchurch Canonicorum and Amphibalus (or whatever his name was) have led me to wonder about the prevalence of back-formation of names in stories of the saints. In particular, might this have happened in the case of another recent saint-of-the-day, Maughold? - since this again is now a place-name. OK, it is, it is thought, the site of the major early monastic establishment on the Isle of Man, but such an establishment might well have used its name to sort itself out with a saintly founder in the distant past (as perhaps Whitchurch Canon. did). The place-name is presumably a Celtic one and I do not know enough about such names to know whether I am talking nonsense - nor do I know how 'secure' the story of St Maughold is thought to be. However, inspired by a recent visit to Maughold with its remarkable collection of early carved stones, I would be interested in any opinions on this matter.
Best wishes,
JP
