medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (29. June) is the feast day of:
Peter & Paul (1st cent.) Celebrated as the co-founders of the Roman church.
Mary, mother of John Mark (1st cent.) Mary appears in Acts 12: 12. Her
house in Jerusalem was apparently a regular meeting place for the apostles
and the Jerusalem Christian community.
Marcellus & Anastasius (d. 274) This pair were missionaries in the area
around Bourges in Gaul, according to tradition sent there from Rome. They
were martyred, one beheaded, the other flogged to death.
Judith and Salome (9th cent.) A rather peculiar legend reports that these
were an English princess and her kinswoman. The two fled from England and
became recluses at Niederaltaich in Bavaria.
Gemma of Gurk (d. 1045) Gemma was a relative of Emperor Henry II. After
she was widowed, she founded the double monastery of Gurk in Carinthia,
where she became a nun.
