The Vita (or Passio or Vita et Passio) in question is by Andrew of Strumi
(a.k.a. Andrew of Parma). Its edition by Friedrich Baethgen is one of
several treats in MGH, Scriptores vol. 30, pt. 2, along with Andrew's Life
of St. John Gualbert, with Hofmeister's second ed. of the anonymous sermon
on the Transit of St. Constantius of Capri, with the priest B.'s prose Life
of St. Anselm of Lucca, and with the great verse Life based upon it by
Rangerius, bp. of Lucca (d. 1112). But this is an enormous folio volume,
not something easy to carry around or to dip in and out of.
Fortunately for fans of the Vita Arialdi there is a much more convenient
edition, with Italian translation, by Marco Navoni: Andrea da Strumi,
_Passione del santo martire milanese Arialdo_, (Milano: Jaca Book, 1994;
251 pp.). Navoni's ed. is based on Baethgen's with recourse as well to a
photocopy of the unique ms. of the Vita but normalizes spellings for ease
of reading comprehension; an added goodie is a brief (78 paragraphs)
anonymous Passio of St. Arialdus. This book was still in print last year,
when it cost a very reasonable Euro 14,46.
Best,
John Dillon
