How long is a piece of string?
- if there are 3 foreground questions every 10 patients and they take
on average 30 minutes to answer - and a GP sees 150 patients a week then
it is approximately 45 questions per week - if they answer 30% of these
then it will be 15 questions per week taking 7.5 hours.
And if the GP works at about 10 minute consultation rate and 5 minutes
administrative per patient then it is a 37.5 hour week and the cme time
on questions alone would be 20% of their time.
But this is impractical - and does not include any time for CME of other
methods.

Subject: How much time should GPs spend on continuing medical education?
Hi,
One of our recent research projects has recently found that Norwegian
GPs spend about 5% of their working week on continuing medical education
and quality improvement work. An obvious question (and one which a
colleague asked immediately on hearing the 5% figure) is: so how much
time should GPs be spending on continuing medical education and quality
improvement work?
I have no idea. I was wondering therefore whether anyone on the list
could provide any help. Is 5% reasonable, or is this so dependent on
the individual GP that it is meaningless to even try and say how much
time GPs should spend on these activities?
Many thanks for any help list members can provide.
Regards,
Shaun Treweek
