7 sessions per week of 3.5hrs
May have been true in the past, but since January I have been covering a
'normal' single handed GP surgery in a town.
1 night per week on call from home (1-2 calls per night)
1 weekend in 5 on call from home (approx 15-25 calls per weekend).
Admittedly I work away from home, but I stay in a £350 per week 2 bedroom
holiday cottage with an open fire, sky TV, a large garden with veranda and I
get a long weekend every second week by cross-covering Fridays with the
neighbouring practice.
However, Jeremy is right, this is not the norm. I have achieved this with a
mixture of good fortune, charm (!) and hard-nosed business tactics.
Interestingly, I get more hassle from other GPs about my income than I do
from the PCT paying me.
My point is, if I can do it when the market is in our favour, why can't
everyone else?
