medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (8. June) is the feast day of:
Maximinus of Aix-en-Provence (1st cent.??) Maximinus seems to have been
added to the medieval legend of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. According to
legend, he was one of the original 72 disciples (perhaps the man born blind
and healed by Jesus), and came to Provence on the same miraculous boat with
Lazarus and company. There he became first bishop of Aix. Rather more
likely is that he was a fifth-century bishop.
Medard of Vermandois (d. c. 560) A noble Frank, Medard became bishop of
Vermandois (removing his see later to Noyon, which he ruled jointly with
Tournai). His cult is already attested in the sixth century. Like St.
Swithin, the weather on his feast day is supposed to predict the weather
for the following 40 days.
Clodulf (Cloud) of Metz (d. 696) Clodulf succeeded his father St. Arnulf
as bishop of Metz, and ruled the diocese for 40 years, winning a reputation
for his care of the poor.
William of York (d. 1154) William Fitzherbert was noble and
well-connected, so it wasn't surprising that he became archbishop of York
in 1140. But a minority opinion accused W. of simony, unchastity, and
intrusion. After an inquiry, William successfully cleared himself (dogged
by vituperative letters by Bernard of Clairvaux, who had gotten involved in
the matter), only to find himself suspended and deposed by the next pope,
the Cistercian Eugenius III. W. retired to the monastic life until 1153
when Bernard, Eugenius, and his replacement as archbishop all died. Then
he was restored to his see, only to die suddenly (perhaps poisoned). There
were miracles at W's tomb, he was regarded as a victim of injustice, and
canonized in 1227.
