medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (5. June) is the feast day of:
Dorotheus of Tyre (d. c. 362) Dorotheus survived Diocletian's persecution
(although he was exiled). After that he became bishop of Tyre. He
attended the council of Nicaea and enjoyed a long episcopate. But he fell
foul of Julian the Apostate and was martyred by being beaten to death.
Boniface (d. 754). One of the BIG saints of the earlier Middle Ages.
Wynfrith (as he was known; I'd change my name, too) was an Englishman.
After becoming a monk he went to Frisia to be a missionary. That didn't
work, so he went to Rome to receive a commission to preach in Bavaria and
Hesse (as well as the name "Boniface"). For nearly four decades, B.
preached in Frisia, Saxony, Bavaria, and Hesse, organized churches,
reformed Frankish Christianity, founded monasteries, and established a very
active and long-lived collaboration with the Carolingian dynasty. Finally,
as an old man he returned to his first mission field of Frisia, where he
and a large number of companions were killed by the Frisians. One of the
more moving relics I've seen is kept at Fulda: the book with which B. tried
to defend himself, slashed nearly in half by the ax that killed him.
Meinwerk of Paderborn (d. 1036) Meinwerk was a relative of the German
emperor Henry II, who appointed M as bishop of Paderborn in 1009. Meinwerk
became very well known as a great builder, the "second founder of
Paderborn," and his cathedral school became famous throughout Germany.
Ferdinand of Portugal (or "the Constant") (blessed) (d. 1443) A younger
son of the Portuguese royal house, Ferdinand opted for a religious life.
He refused the offer of a cardinalate, becoming instead master general of
the military order of Aviz. F. was captured in the Portuguese defeat at
Tangier. Since his brother refused to ransom him, F. was held under poor
conditions for five years, until he finally died of neglect and his jailors
hung his body from the prison wall.
