medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (9. May) is the feast day of:
Hermas (1st cent.) Hermas is mentioned in Romans 16:14. According to
some, H. was the author of the important early Christian text "The
Shepherd." Greek tradition tells that H. became bishop of Philippi, where
he was martyred.
Pachomius (d. 346) The founder of cenobitic monasticism, Pachomius, was a
native of Upper Egypt. Released from the army in 313, he became a
Christian, living for a few years as a hermit and then organizing a
communal life. By the time of his death, P. ruled over nine monasteries
for men and two for women; these communities are reputed to have been
enormous, so clearly P. had a good idea and the ability to carry it out
well.
Tudec (Tudy) of Landevennec (5th/6th cent.) Tudec was a hermit who became
a monastic founder and missionary in Brittany. He was a disciple of St.
Mawes. T. may have also made it to Cornwall, where a church is dedicated
to him.
Gerontius of Cervia (d. 501) Gerontius was bishop of Cervia (Italy),
murdered while returning from a synod in Rome. He is regarded as a martyr.
Gregory of Ostia (d. c. 1044) Gregory was a Benedictine, who became
cardinal-bishop of Ostia. He served as papal legate in Navarre and Old
Castile, where he is still venerated (but I confess that I can't find out
why).
Nicholas Albergati (blessed) (d. 1443) Nicholas was a Carthusian monk,
forced against his will to become archbishop of Bologna in 1418. He was
also a cardinal from 1426 on. N. was a noted mediator in the international
disputes of his age, besides being an important patron of learning.
