medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (27. May) is the feast day of:
Julius the Veteran (d. 304) Julius had served in the Roman armies for 27
years, and had even re-enlisted as a veteran. But under the new
anti-Christian policy, he had to sacrifice to the state gods. He was
offered a 10-year bonus if he would do so (clearly he was an important role
model), but refused. So he was beheaded.
Isaac of Constantinople (d. 424/5) Isaac appeared in Constantinople and
prophesied that catastrophe would befall the Arian emperor Valens-shortly
before the battle of Adrianople, which fulfilled all his prophecies and
then some. Isaac lived for some time in a cell before the city gates, and
in 381 founded the first monastery in Constantinople.
Frederick of Liege (d. 1121) The venial Bishop Alexander of Liege was
deposed in 1119, and Frederick took his place. Less than two years later
he died, apparently poisoned by one of Alexander's supporters.
John Calvin (d. 1564) One of the "great names" of the Protestant
Reformation. Who would probably be horrified at the notion of being
included on a list of saints (unless he really was as hypocritical as he
sometimes sounds). Whatever Calvin's feelings, he is commemorated on this
day in German Protestant churches.
