medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (20. May) is the feast day of:
Plautilla of Rome (d. c. 67) According to legend, Plautill was baptized by
Peter and was present at the execution of Paul. In art, she is often shown
giving her veil to Paul while he was on his way to martyrdom; or she is
shown receiving it back from Paul's hands after his death. P. is said to
have been the mother of St. Flavia Domitilla.
Baudelius of Nimes (2nd-3rd cent.) Baudelius was a native of Orleans. He
was a married layman, very zealous at spreading Christianity. He was
martyred at Nimes. B's cult became very popular throughout France and
northern Spain--about 400 churches are dedicated to him.
Anastasius of Brescia (d. 610) Bishop Anastasius played an important role
in the conversion of the Arian Lombards to catholic Christianity.
Ethelbert of East Anglia (d. 794) A political martyr, King Ethelbert was
assassinated at the order of Offa of Mercia. His shrine at Hereford was a
very popular pilgrimage site. I confess, though, that I can't find any
reason to think Ethelbert "holy."
Bernardino of Siena (d. 1444) Bernardino, after a good education, became a
Franciscan friar in 1402. He soon became an extremely popular preacher,
traveling everywhere in Italy except the kingdom of Naples. He traveled on
foot, stopping to preach for 3-4 hours at a stretch, drawing such large
crowds that he had to preach out of doors. B. is especially remembered for
encouraging devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, holding up plaques with IHS
written within golden rays for veneration. In 1437 B. became vicar-general
of the Observant Franciscans. He was canonized only six years after his
death.
