medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I notice that Michael the Archangel is often referred to as "saint", whereas
angels like Gabriel and Aphrael are never (in my knowledge anyway) called
"saint". What kind of sainthood does this refer to? Surely by definition,
the angels are with God, and therefore achieve a degree of saintliness (in
the etymological meaning of the word at least). However, the word is only
used normally after a formal procedure of canonisation. Has a Pope at some
point canonised Michael the Archangel?
If anyone can explain any of this it would be welcome.
Thanks.
