medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I am looking at English bishoprics in the 12th century and there are
occasions when bishops fled abroad for quite long periods (Anselm, Thomas
Becket etc). In these cases are the bishoprics technically without their
bishop (and so come under the term 'sede vacante' [if the term can be
applied to bishops rather than the Pope]) or does the bishop still
technically control the diocese.
Also - is there any sort of ceremony/procedure which occurs when the bishop
is abroad to delegate authority to another bishop or his chapter if the
need arises. (Presumably one answer is that the suffragan steps in, but
does this happen in reality).
Many thanks for any help given
Chris Daniell
