medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (29. May) is the feast day of:
Cyril of Caesarea (in Cappadocia) (d. c. 251) Cyril was a boy who
converted to Christianity without his parents' knowledge. When his father
found out, he kicked the kid out of the house and disinherited him. The
governor heard about it and arrested Cyril under the anti-Christian laws.
Since he was so young, the governor did his best first to tempt and then to
frighten the kid into apostasy, but C refused and was executed.
Maximinus of Trier (d. c. 349) Maximinus became bishop of Trier in 333.
He was strongly opposed to Arians in a particularly dangerous time, and
gave refuge to both Athanasius and Patriarch Paul of Constantinople.
Jerome says that he was "one of the most courageous bishops of his time."
Sisinnius, Martyrius, and Alexander (d. 397) Ambrose sent these three to
help evangelize the Tyrol. The Tyroleans didn't like the idea. In fact
they resented it so much that S was beaten to death, M was dragged to
death, and A was burned alive.
Theodosia of Constantinople (d. 745) Theodosia was a nun of Constantinople
who resented strongly the imperial iconoclast edicts and decided to do
something about it. When an officer came to deface an image of Christ
above the main door of her convent, she shook the ladder he was standing on
so hard that he fell and was killed. Then T led a group of women to stone
the patriarch's palace. All the women were punished, but Theodosia as
ringleader was tortured and killed.
Juan de Atares (d. c. 750) Juan was a hermit, living under a hugh rock in
the diocese of Jaca in the Aragonese Pyrenees. The great Benedictine
monastery of San Juan de la Pena was later built on the site.
