medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I need to know what time High Mass was (was probably) at old St.
Paul's Cathedral, London, on an ordinary Monday in early
December 1514. This sounds terribly specific but it has to do
with the sequence of events involving a murder in the "Lollards
Tower" prison room, which was apparently located up in the
spire. The victim was Richard Hun or Hunne, a merchant tailor,
and one of those indicted--after a proceeding involving Henry
VIII--was the Bishop of London's chancellor, William Horsey.
The affair is described in detail over 11 pages in Hall's
Chronicle (1550). It's a pretty good read for historically
inclined fans of detective fiction or watchers of "CSI." In the
1809 Ellis edition of Hall it's on pp. 573-80; Penn has
facsimiles online (Henry VIII chapter, folio 50r, to 55v:
