medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
According to the BBC website
(http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/3014423.stm), Mr
Clarke has been backtracking (which, whether he actually
said what he allegedly said or not, is good news). I quote:-
"In a statement in response to the press coverage, Mr
Clarke denied being "in any way opposed to medieval studies
(or for that matter Latin)".
His statement added: "I positively support the spread and
development of both classical and medieval studies.
"What I have said on a number of occasions, including at
Worcester, is that the 'medieval concept' of the university
as a community of scholars is only a very limited
justification for the state to fund the apparatus of
universities.'"
It looks as if Mr Clarke needs medieval historians to
explain to him that vocational training was a significant
function of the medieval universities, just as it is
of our own...
best wishes,
Bella M.
