Notes are already circulating about the publication by the Independent on
Sunday next Sunday 11 May of a list of 10 'Top Cartographers'. This will be
published in their business section, as a profile of cartography as a
business and career.
The list was compiled with significant input from both the British
Cartographic Society and the Society of Cartographers. The aim being to
present a cross-section of cartography as a whole, hence the range of
specialisms represented. IoS had specific criteria, in particular that the
people should still be working, and should have reached some sort of peak in
their careers.
I don't know how it will finally be presented, but we emphasised to the
IoS that we would prefer it not to be a 'Top 10' which suggests a ranking
(although they did ask for a nomination for the Number 1 slot), but rather a
selection of 10 cartographers from different fields of the subject.
The list is almost certain to cause some contention, but it will certainly
serve to raise the profile of cartography, the BCS and the SOC.
